Holy Spirit's Role in Spiritual Movements

The Holy Spirit is the often-overlooked powerhouse behind true spiritual revival.

Key points

“Readable” is a lightly edited reading copy; “Verbatim” stays close to the spoken words. Audio is the record of what was said.

The Secret of Revival

The secret to revival lies in the person of the Holy Spirit. Zechariah 4:6 states, "Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord." This verse puzzled me until I understood the Hebrew words. The term "might" can be likened to the German Wehrmacht, representing a superb military organization. "Power" refers to pressure, not the Holy Spirit's power. The best translation is "not by force or chain of command, but by my Spirit." In 1790, the churches faced overwhelming challenges, and the answer was the Spirit, not human organization.

The Power of the Holy Spirit

Before His ascension, Jesus told His disciples they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them (Acts 1:8). This power is not like a farmer's tractor, ready to be used at will, but a dynamic force guiding and empowering believers. The Holy Spirit is the Lord of the harvest, directing and sending laborers into the field. He is the executive of the Godhead, carrying out God's will without intruding on human freedom.

The Holy Spirit's Personal Nature

The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force or a mere influence. He is a person with intellect, will, and emotion. He teaches, guides, and can be grieved. His intellect is infinite, surpassing even the greatest human minds. His will is irresistible, yet He respects our freedom. His emotions are pure and holy. The Holy Spirit is God, possessing omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence. He is involved in creation and comprehends the thoughts of God.

The Mystery of the Trinity

Understanding the Holy Spirit's deity is challenging. He is part of the Trinity, one God revealed as Father, Son, and Spirit. This mystery is beyond full human comprehension, yet it is true. The Holy Spirit is not a mere function or role but shares the same essence as the Father and the Son. While analogies fall short, the truth of the Trinity is evident in Scripture and creation.

The Role of the Holy Spirit in Revival

The Holy Spirit is the key to revival. While we can pray, preach, and witness, only the Spirit can renew the Church and awaken nations. We must not fear the Holy Spirit but embrace His work. He is the Spirit of Jesus, the Spirit of Christ, and His presence brings comfort, conviction, and strength. Revival is not merely the right use of means but a work of God through His Spirit.

Closing Prayer

Search me, O God, and know my heart. Try me and know my thoughts. See if there be any grieving way in me. Then lead me in the way everlasting. O God, when we contemplate the sin and unrighteousness in our nation today, wilt thou not raise us up again? Pour out thy Spirit on the Church to revive us, and on the people to awaken them. Then give us the privilege of bringing them in. For that's the work that's given us to do. Amen.
