The Beginning of the Welsh Revival

Many have asked about the Welsh Revival and Evan Roberts, whom God used mightily in 1904. Though I wasn't alive during the revival, I knew Evan Roberts personally. The revival began with prayer, as most great movements do. Joseph Jenkins, a Keswick Convention speaker and pastor in Newquay, Wales, challenged his young congregation by asking, "What does Jesus Christ mean to you?" A young girl, Flory Evans, responded sincerely, "I love the Lord Jesus with all my heart." This heartfelt declaration deeply moved the young people and marked the beginning of the revival.

Evan Roberts and the Spread of Revival

Evan Roberts, a coal miner and Sunday school teacher, felt called to ministry and was studying at Newcastle Emlyn College. Hearing of the revival in Newquay, he was stirred to action. Roberts asked his principal if he could speak to the young people in his home church, and with permission, he began to preach. His message was simple: confess known sins, put away doubtful habits, obey the Spirit promptly, and confess faith publicly. These became the four pillars of the Welsh Revival. In five months, 100,000 conversions occurred, and the revival spread rapidly.

The Social Impact of the Revival

The revival's social impact was astounding. Drunkenness and crime rates were halved, leading to tavern bankruptcies and unemployed police. Judges received white gloves, symbolizing no cases to try. Even coal mines experienced slowdowns as miners stopped using foul language, confusing the horses. The revival's influence was so profound that it was reported in newspapers worldwide, including the United States.

The Revival's Global Influence

The Welsh Revival's impact extended beyond Wales, reaching the United States. In Schenectady, New York, newspapers reported daily conversions. In Portland, Oregon, 200 stores closed for prayer. The revival swept through Texas, leading to a surge in baptisms and the founding of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1905. Despite challenges within the Southern Baptist Convention, the revival's influence was undeniable.

Defending Evan Roberts' Legacy

In 1974, a journalist slandered Evan Roberts, claiming his preaching increased illegitimate births. I investigated and found the opposite: the illegitimate birth rate in Wales dropped significantly during the revival. Evan Roberts was a godly man, and his legacy remains a testament to the power of revival. The Welsh Revival's impact on individuals and communities continues to inspire and challenge us to share God's work with future generations.
