Spiritual Awakening: Key Elements for Genuine Church Revival

Revival in a local church involves a profound spiritual awakening rather than just organized meetings. Dr. Orr emphasizes the role of pastors, the necessity of confession, and the involvement of young people in fostering genuine revival.

Key points

“Readable” is a lightly edited reading copy; “Verbatim” stays close to the spoken words. Audio is the record of what was said.

Understanding Revival in the Local Church

Revival in a local church is not about organizing a week of meetings for membership growth or evangelism. Instead, it focuses on deepening the spiritual life of the congregation. This involves both perfection and deepening, where those who have been shallow in their faith become more profound. Revival does not solve all church problems, but it addresses many. Charles Finney's idea that revival is the right use of appropriate means is partially correct, but it involves more than just organizing events; it requires the work of the Holy Spirit.

Personal Experience of Revival

In 1950, I witnessed genuine revival in a Lutheran Church in Linwood, California. The pastor and his wife were eager for spiritual renewal, and they invited me, a Baptist preacher, to speak. By midweek, the meetings extended late into the night, filled with preaching, questions, testimonies, and open discussions. This revival led to significant evangelism, with 1,400 new members joining the church the following year. The pastor's openness was crucial, as a resistant pastor can hinder revival.

The Role of Confession in Revival

Confession is an essential part of revival, but it must be appropriate to the sin's scope. My maxim is: let the circle of the sin be the circle of the confession. Secret sins should be confessed to God alone, private sins to those affected, and public sins as far as they are known. This principle ensures that confession is meaningful and not indiscriminate.

Preaching Themes for Revival

When preaching a revival series, I begin with repentance, the first word of the gospel, which means a change in attitude, not just feeling sorry. I address sin by comparing it to the standards of the Sermon on the Mount, emphasizing that Christians are called to higher standards than the world. Preaching on sin, the law, forgiveness, and confession leads to total commitment, the crisis of sanctification.

Signs of Revival and the Role of Young People

A sign that revival is needed is the lowering of righteousness standards in the church. Despite claims of increased born-again Christians, lifestyle differences between the church and the community are minimal. Revival is not just for individual churches but for the broader community. Pastors must prioritize the kingdom over personal success. Historically, older women often initiate prayer, but young people are usually the first to respond to revival, fulfilling the prophecy that sons and daughters shall prophesy.

The Global Impact of Revival

Genuine revival in North American churches would significantly impact global missions, given the large missionary force from this region. However, God can work independently, as seen in the revival in Hunan, China, where local churches are sending missionaries to other provinces. Revival is a global movement, and its effects can be far-reaching.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we pray for a deepening of spiritual life in our churches. May pastors be open to Your work, and may confession lead to genuine repentance. Stir the hearts of young people and unite churches in seeking Your kingdom. Let revival spread beyond our borders, impacting the world for Your glory. Amen.
