# J. Edwin Orr (1912-1987)

## Who he was
J. Edwin Orr (James Edwin Orr) was an Irish-American evangelist, author, and church historian.
Born in Belfast on 15 January 1912; died 22 April 1987. He earned a doctorate at the University
of Oxford (1948), served as a U.S. Air Force chaplain in World War II (seven battle stars), and
was a professor at Fuller Theological Seminary's School of World Mission from 1966 to 1981. In
1974 he founded the Oxford Reading and Research Conference on Evangelical Awakenings. He was an
early advisor to Billy Graham and helped shape the prayer-breakfast movement.

## What he taught
Orr held that genuine revival is a sovereign work of God, preceded by united extraordinary prayer
and marked by repentance, confession, and renewed devotion that overflows into evangelism and
social reform. He documented the recurring patterns of the great awakenings across three centuries.
